UNION BANK EMPLOYEES AID HOME REHAB PROJECT
ANNIE YAHINIAH Sun-Sentinel
About 15 employees from Union Bank recently participated in Rebuilding Together 2002, a Leadership Broward project.
Rebuilding Together 2002, originally known as Christmas in April, is the nation's largest volunteer home renovation organization. The mission is to preserve and revitalize houses and communities, assuring low-income homeowners, particularly those who are elderly, disabled and families with children, live in warmth, safety and independence.
Every year volunteers got together in Fort Lauderdale, bring out rakes, shovels, gloves and towels and start working. This year's volunteers focused on improving the exterior of the house including pressure cleaning, painting, landscaping, paving and roof repairs.
Seven houses in Fort Lauderdale's Broward Estates were selected to be included in the project by the Broward County Community Development Division and the Broward Estates Civic Association. Lois Hutchinson, of Fort Lauderdale, was grateful to be included in the project.
"How can I put into words how I feel about all the work these people are doing on my house?" said Hutchinson. "I am so excited. I've never experienced anything like this before." "Rebuilding Together is about neighbors helping neighbors," said Larry C. Wine, a volunteer who is executive vice president and chief operating officer of Union Bank. "Lois and the other homeowners were so grateful for the work we did to improve their homes and renew their neighborhood spirit."

Rebuilding Together is one of several community services and programs supported by the bank, including March of Dimes, United Way, Make-a-Wish Foundation, Jack & Jill Children's Center and more. Wildlife photos, Everglades news topics of club meeting The Exchange Club of Pompano Beach recently came together at the Chateau de Ville for an evening of drinks, dinner and wildlife.
Wildlife photographer Joanne Williams gave a 20-minute slide show presentation highlighting her shots taken in Africa, the Everglades and other locations throughout Florida. Stuart Strahl, president of Audubon of Florida, gave a slide presentation on the Everglades restoration program that was recently approved by Congress. More than 60 members and guests attended the gathering.
The Exchange Club is a service organization that provides financial support to several local charities such as Woodhouse, the Parent Enrichment Center in Pompano Beach and the Boys & Girls Club of Broward County. They also conduct community improvement projects throughout the year. The club meets every Wednesday at noon at the Flaming Pit Restaurant, 1150 N. Federal Highway, Pompano Beach. Retired physicians group donates $500 to Holy Cross The Senior Retired Physicians, consisting of more than 100 members in Broward County, recently made a $500 donation to Holy Cross Hospital in Fort Lauderdale. "We appreciate their support and in return we want to help with their projects, said Dr. Ludovic DeVocht, president of the group. The physicians meet every third Wednesday from October through May. While the meetings are for social purposes, they also serve to update doctors on medical issues and technology. "These physicians continue to demonstrate their involvement and love for their profession. At Holy Cross, we respect and appreciate their commitment and support," said Maria Soldani, executive director of marketing and public relations for Holy Cross Hospital.
